Social Effets

Industrialization caused cities to grow very rapidly. In 1700, Europe's population was at about 110 million, and by 1850 it was up to 260 million.  Everyone came to the cities in search of work in mills and factories.  The working conditions were not good people had to work long hours up to 16 hours a day.  The machines that they operated were unsafe and many pople got hurt and some even died.  When these people got hurt there was no worker's comp so the workers had to pay there own bill, not the company.  There was also child labor and women worked to because it didn't cost as much to employ them. Many people joined unions and started strikes for better working conditions and better pay.  Some people also started to smash and break machines so they didn't have to work on them because they were unsafe, these people were called Luddites.

Food supply changed because of improved grain production and cultivation of potatoes and now people ate as much as they could.

The economic expansion from around 1875 to 1900 caused overcrowding in the cities and because of this there was poor sanitation and disease spread quickly.  The great cholera epidemics of 1830, caused concerns with health and sanitation. New water and swewer systems were made.  The rise of modern industry had a profound impact on people and their living.   The Industrial Revolution was not good on environmental conditions because the amount of carbon dioxide in the air increased dramatically.
